Spinal Injury

Thousands of people today, mostly men, are afflicted with spinal injury. Spinal injuries may result from a traumatic or violent experience like a car accident, or a disease such as a tumor.

What steps can be taken to treat spinal injury while helping both the patient and family members cope with back pain? A patient with a spinal injury usually experiences paralysis as the most common symptom. Treatment techniques to cure spinal injury may be done in either the hospital or the patient's home, depending on the severity of the injury. For an occupational therapist to determine the appropriate treatment, the following steps should be taken:

  • Observe the patient engaging in hobbies and other activities to determine the level of functionality.
  • Find out whether the patient still has the same motivation for his or her favorite activities that he or she had prior to the spinal injury.

After making a complete evaluation, the occupational therapist may prescribe the following treatments to combat the condition:

  • One-on-one therapy sessions with the patient for re-training in the event that the patient has difficulty performing normal activities.
  • Help the patient learn and apply coping techniques for adjusting to living with a spinal injury.

Spinal injury treatment may not be very effective if patients and loved ones do not cooperate. Here are a few things that patients and their loved ones may do to ensure that treatment is successful:

  • Both the patient and family members may have to cooperate fully during rehabilitation. Active participation is very important for positive results, regardless of the technique employed to eradicate spinal injury.
  • Loved ones and friends must give their full support and encouragement to enable patients to gain independence in their daily activities.

A spinal injury is not the end of the world. With the correct treatment and right attitude, leading a productive and normal life is possible.
